DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

In 2018, the South Pasadena School District received a grant from SPEF to implement a Digital Citizenship program at each of the five schools. Mr. Adanto is the program teacher at SPMS. You can read the district approved curriculum here

HOW IT WORKS
6th Graders meet during homeroom throughout the year to have guided discussions about Digital Citizenship related topics while 7th and 8th Graders attend class assemblies. The discussions are in depth in 6th grade and then key ideas are reinforced and built upon with the assembly material in 7th and 8th grades.

LESSON PLAN TOPICS
Bully Lesson – Cyber Bullying

My Media – Media

  • 6th Graders were encouraged to keep a log of their media use (TV, computer, video games, phone, other devices) over the course of a weekend and then discuss the results in class. Most students were surprised to learn how much media they had consumed.
  • 7th and 8th Graders attended an assembly discussing media overload. The Broadcast Journalism classes created a PSA regarding media and broadcast to the entire student body.
  • All students viewed the video: Social Media Addiction

Which Me – Who am I

  • 6th Graders discussed what a secondary digital account is (i.e. a “Finsta” is a fake Instagram account) and submitted a reflection sharing the potential harm of secondary accounts.
  • 7th and 8th Graders watched a short skit from the drama class on the dangers of secondary accounts.
  • All students were presented with programs implemented in the following lesson plan and videos: Who Are You Online?

Safe Talk – Safe Online

  • 6th Graders will discuss the rules for safe online messaging and learn how to navigate potentially uncomfortable situations when communicating online. Students will be asked to reflect on topics including, how to handle scenarios of bad language online, how to report abuse, and long term effects of participating in negative internet behavior.
  • 7th and 8th Graders will attend an assembly highlighting the topic of safe online talk.
  • Lesson plan and accompanying videos can be found here:  Safe Online Talk
